Progress Report: Excel Foundation Seed Fund Recipient

The report highlights the impact of Excel Foundation seed funding on two innovative projects. Nashi Charcoal Briquets, led by Namushi Sitali, focuses on producing environmentally friendly charcoal alternatives from neglected materials. The support enabled the establishment of a production and sales shelter, expanding output, improving storage, and increasing market reach, while also inspiring her family and strengthening community livelihoods.

The RailWatch Technology Project, developed by Kennedy Mukwakwa, is an automated railway level-crossing safety system aimed at reducing accidents in Zambia. Since its inception in 2016, the project has evolved into a structured safety solution, with key progress including system refinement, automation focus, and engagement with Zambia Railways Limited. The project is now positioned for further technical collaboration, pilot implementation, and integration into existing railway safety frameworks.

Progress Report: Nashi Charcoal Briquets

My work focuses on producing charcoal alternatives from neglected materials that would otherwise harm the environment if left unattended, this initiative has been truly transformative.

The Excel Foundation seed fund that I received enabled me to build a small shelter that now serves as both a production space and a sales outlet. This has given me the stability to store my briquets safely, expand production, and reach more customers.

Beyond the business growth, the feature in the magazine has inspired my children – showing them that with dedication and hard work, great achievements are possible. Seeing their mother recognized and supported has motivated them to dream bigger and strive for excellence in their own lives.

Thank you, Excel Magazine Foundation, for believing in my vision and for empowering me to turn challenges into opportunities. Your support has not only strengthened my business but also uplifted my family and community.

Progress Report: RailWatch Technology Project

(Issue 10 – Excel Foundation Seed Fund Recipient)

RailWatch Technology is an automated level crossing safety system that I have been developing since 2016, aimed at enhancing safety at railway level crossings in Zambia.

The project was initiated in response to the continued occurrence of accidents at level crossings, often resulting from lack of automated warning systems and poor signages. Over the years, the project has progressed from an initial concept into a structured safety solution designed with practical railway operating conditions in mind.

Key development milestones include the refinement of the system architecture, focus on automation and reliability, and adaptation to existing rail infrastructure.

A significant recent milestone was an official virtual meeting with the management of Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL), during which I formally presented the RailWatch Technology concept. The discussion focused on level crossing safety concerns, the rising trend of accidents, and the potential role of automation in improving operational safety. The engagement provided valuable insight and marked an important step toward aligning the project with institutional safety priorities.

At its current stage, RailWatch Technology is positioned for deeper technical engagement and stakeholder collaboration. I anticipate further discussions with Zambia Railways and other rail authorities to explore pilot implementation opportunities, technical evaluation, and possible integration within existing railway safety frameworks.
